Hack@Brown is a community at Brown University that holds Hackathon for over 200 college students. The theme for this year was Greenhouse, and I collaborated with other designers to create the brand identity including the website, social media posts, and merchandise.
Since our target participants were college students, we approached friendly and welcoming concept. We created a list of keywords for “Greenhouse” as a team, and the designers narrowed it down to decide the direction.Designers developed the idea for color and typography, and each designer was responsible to design a 3D graphic as part of the style guide.
College students who are interested in software, hardware, and design to collaborate with other students200+ students participated in this hackathon.
Brainstormed with other teams
During the weekly meetings, our design team discussed our theme with othe teams. We had a list of keywords related to greenhouse and narrowed down into specific concept. After the meetings, we had design team meetings and used figma to organize our ideas. We decided color palettes and typography choices together as a team.
Switch from In-Person to Virtual Event
We planned this hackathon as a in-person event in the beginning. However, we had to switch to virtual due to the weather.
Fast-Paced Environment
Since the developer team needed to code the website, our design team needed to finish brand identity and website design in one month. We worked with tight deadlines. We had design team weekly meetings to develop our concepts after the all hands-in meetings.
-> Since I worked with 30+ members to prepare Hackathon, I learned how event planning and collaboration as a big group works.
-> I learned how to approach user-friendly design and view the design from the user’s perspective.
-> I explored 3D modeling and incorporated this skill into branding.
